This was originally a Usenet response from Open Source evangelist Eric S. Raymond to some common hacker newbie questions and inspired the new title of this blog.

Speak, O Guru: How can I become a Unix Wizard?

O, Nobly Born: know that the Way to Wizardhood is long, and winding, and Fraught with Risks. Thou must [...]

I own a laptop that came bundled with Windows Vista. I installed Linux as fast as possible, but left Windows as a dual-boot option mainly to check that things behave nicely in Internet Explorer.

And a good thing too, because they usually don’t.

I also keep it because I own some junk hardware that also doesn’t play [...]

Net Applications’s service NetMarketShare tracks browser and operating system market share for several of the most popular websites. The statistics are generated by analyzing data obtained from clients accessing the websites and finding patterns in the data that reveal the client OS. The current data is available here.

The Linux market share of 1.02% looks rather [...]

Kanian, Ubuntu is a good place to start. If you’re worried about performance then maybe Xubuntu would be the best choice because it is less resource intensive. Otherwise Ubuntu or Kubuntu should work reasonably well on your machine.

The Windows treadmill

I own a laptop that came bundled with Windows Vista. I installed Linux as fast as possible, but left Windows as a dual-boot option mainly to check that things behave nicely in Internet Explorer.
And a good thing too, because they usually don't.
I also keep it because I own some junk hardware that also doesn't play [...]

From Hardy to Helena

I've recently upgraded my Lenovo Y510 from Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy, which I've been running since around May 2008, to Linux Mint 8, Helena (which is based on Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10). I used to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu every 6 months, but it got a bit tiring keeping up on the upgrade treadmill, running [...]

Fedora 12

Fedora 12 has been released...
Check out the feature list at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/12/FeatureList

Wine, Cedega, Crossover and PlayonLinux

As the title says I'm going to talk about some of the differences between all of the above.
This is also my first blog so I'm hoping that I don't do it to badly. WINE isĀ  basically a windows emulator for Linux operating systems. WINE allows you to run some applications on Linux that does not [...]

Inside a ******* * house party

The ONE thing M$ is very good at is propaganda, more commonly know as FUD. People like belonging to things and the Windows 7 launch parties make it cool so that people want to belong. Certain sections of the media also take this so that M$ now does not even have to pay for their [...]

Microsoft said on Monday that it will open up the data format behind its Outlook program, CNet reports.
In a blog posting, Microsoft group manager Paul Lorimer said the company was working to publish the specifications behind Outlook's .pst files.
The move, he said, would "allow developers to read, create, and interoperate with the data in .pst [...]

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer: Chrome And Safari Are Rounding Errors

More wisdom from that other operating system.
Steve Ballmer going off about various topics and not sounding good doing it.
They bring up the issue of M$ bundling IE with Windows.
I always thought that was abuse of market share because of so many PC shipping with no choice in operating system, therefore no [...]

How (not) to host a launch party

Microsoft is ramping up its buzz machine for the launch of Windows 7 on October 22 and, as part of its effort to get word-of-mouth marketing going, is urging users to host Windows 7 "launch parties". And just to make sure that users get it right the company has released a video giving party-hosts tips [...]

AutoJump my most used shell utility

So the thing with developing in Linux is that you're going to use the shell a lot. And the other thing with Linux is that most things are in a deep directory hierarchy. I find myself changing to different directories with long names a lot.
Even with tab-completion, it becomes really tiresome, and slows me down.
I [...]
