Hehe I was also testing it. I love the server addition but was worried that there was no upgrade path. I also installed the Desktop but it seem to have a mind of his own

I’m sure we have a word or two to say about localised versions of some packages and ZA-language spell checkers, etc. :)

I think there should definitely be a section on setting up local-infrastructure connections. Most of the content could be generic and then add in sections for SA-specific things. Perhaps a small section from Translate.org.za? :-)

Are you planning to keep it as general as possible, or would there be some focus on South Africa? If there is a South African focus I would suggest adding instructions for common setup tasks such as internet via Vodacom/MTN/whatever 3G.

@admin We should keep the guides nice and simple. Kinda how to install and run a without having to alter to much stuff.
Addon Guide should be maintained regularly as some applications come and go. Just need to also make sure we give people the best options without having to install everything. Like @zerigi gave his suggestions with descriptions is the way we should maybe for the guides
@zerigi Hey ill have a look at the applications as that would be really handy in the future for me personally too. im still a FOSS noobie and loving it.

@morgan and @zerlgi have suggested creating distribution specific installation guides to help new users get up and running. The one suggestion has been that the guides should have two parts: a) initial install and b) addons like flash, mp3, etc. Makes sense to me. Any other ideas?

Protecting kids online: Gnome Nanny on Ubuntu

Anyone who has children will know that it doesn’t take them long to get the hang of using a computer and, as soon as they can read, they’re ready to hit the Internet with a vengeance. But while the Internet is an awesome place for kids to learn and play it is also full of [...]

Open source software anti-capitalism?

Open source software is anti-capitalism and undermines intellectual property. It’s not a new claim against free and open source software, but now a new report suggests that a pro-proprietary lobby group has not only been pushing this line around the globe but is also looking to get pro-open source countries listed on the US’ Special [...]

The Windows treadmill

I own a laptop that came bundled with Windows Vista. I installed Linux as fast as possible, but left Windows as a dual-boot option mainly to check that things behave nicely in Internet Explorer.
And a good thing too, because they usually don’t.
I also keep it because I own some junk hardware that also doesn’t play [...]

From Hardy to Helena

I’ve recently upgraded my Lenovo Y510 from Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy, which I’ve been running since around May 2008, to Linux Mint 8, Helena (which is based on Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10). I used to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu every 6 months, but it got a bit tiring keeping up on the upgrade treadmill, running [...]

Wine, Cedega, Crossover and PlayonLinux

As the title says I’m going to talk about some of the differences between all of the above.
This is also my first blog so I’m hoping that I don’t do it to badly. WINE isĀ  basically a windows emulator for Linux operating systems. WINE allows you to run some applications on Linux that does not [...]

Inside a ******* * house party
